Discipleship: Convenience or Conviction

Jesus made it clear that being one of His disciples would require discipline. In fact the words disciple and discipline come from the same root word. Jesus taught that following Him would require…

Self Denial
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” (Luke 9:23-24)

“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)

Staying in the Word
“Then Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Obedience
“Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” (John 14:23-24)

Jesus never promised an easy, convenient route to spiritual maturity. Question: Are you looking for a convenient way to Christian maturity? Or, have you embraced the convictions necessary to grow in Christlikeness? This discipleship semester affords you the opportunity to continue your spiritual growth or to start it. Either way, opportunity lies is only in the present – yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not promised. As Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” (John 9:4)
